Biography
Dr. Bonavia

Personalized care, that is what I am striving to provide to individuals and families everyday at my office. I encourage the people who see me to take charge of their healthcare and I provide them with the advice, information and tools they need to be successful. I truly care about my patients and work with them as we experience triumphs and challenges together.

Being a family physician allows me to provide comprehensive care to all members of the family. I enjoy all aspects of medicine and have a special interest in Women's Health, Pediatrics, and all aspects of adult medicine including hypertension, obesity, diabetes and other chronic diseases, as well as, care of the elderly. Perhaps most importantly, I am dedicated to health promotion and preventative medicine. I would much rather prevent a heart attack, for example, than treat one.

My training and experience have provided me with the background necessary to offer you the high level of care that you deserve. After graduating with high honors from the University of Notre Dame, I attended Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago. I then moved to Milwaukee and completed my internship and residency in Family Medicine. I have been in Wisconsin ever since. For several years, I was an Assistant Professor in Family Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin and cared for patients and taught medical students and new doctors. I am a former chair of the Department of Family Practice at an area hospital. I am board certified by the American Board of Family Practice. For over 15 years I have been caring for individuals and families in Southeastern Wisconsin and am a founding member of my new practice at the Port Washington Family Medical Clinic.

Outside the office, my life is also very full, trying to keep up with my amazing family. My wife is an incredible, supportive woman, and my three children are a source of great pride. I try not to brag too much about them in the office, but it is tough. I look at my family and my patients and count my blessings every day.

Testimonials Back to Top

I am seventy three years old and have had numerous physicians in my
lifetime. I would like to share with you my experience with Dr.
Bonavia.

I found Dr. Bonavia to be as competent and thorough as any other
physicians that I have encountered in the past. He is an excellent
listener who provides his patients with every opportunity to discuss in
detail their condition.

I recently had to visit Dr. Bonavia with a severe pain in my throat and
also in my stomach. He ordered an EKG and immediately determined that I
had had a minor heart attack and insisted that I be taken immediately to
a hospital. At the risk of sounding melodramatic, I feel Dr. Bonavia
prevented a more serious heart attack.

He has my utmost respect and confidence.

Priorities to consider when choosing a physician:
a . Personality of physician
b . Effectiveness of physician
c . Efficiency of physician
d . Availability of physician
e. Office staff

a. Dr. Bonavia is a good listener, talks in terms that a non-physician
can understand and is in good company...he recently fell off his
bicycle--just like our president and John Kerry. He is serious. but
knows how to smile. He is empathetic. He is detail-oriented and
professional. He is a good communicator.

b. Effectiveness of Dr. Bonavia-- He listens and is open to
suggestions from his clients. If one method is not working, he's open
to modifications. Dr. Bonavia promotes communication and works well
with other specialty physicians. He keeps up-to-date on new medications
and procedures by attending seminars, conventions and daily reading of
medical updates.

c. Efficiency--Dr. Bonavia does not keep you waiting, yet allows you
all of the time you require to answer your questions.

d. Availability--Dr. Bonavia works in a clinic with two other equally
qualified physicians. Most times you can obtain "same day"
appointments.

e. Office Staff--The office staff is efficient, pleasant and
professional.

I have been a patient of Dr. Bonavia for years. I highly recommend
you contact him yourself to determine your compatability--to decide for yourself if you are a "match."

"Having known Dr. John Bonavia since our days in medical residency training together over 20 years ago, I can confidently attest to his abilities as a family physician. Dr. Bonavia is the most empathetic, caring physician I have ever known. His educational background and medical training are superb, and he is deeply committed to providing excellent care for his patients. He has been both a professor to many students and a caregiver to thousands of patients. I would have no reservation in having him care for members of my own family and recommend him to anyone who seeks his services."
